Redesign a practice segment around one observable learning objective and increase the rate of useful attempts.
Bring the Week 7 roster and one normal practice plan. Identify at least three athletes whose participation can be observed during the lab or next practice.
“Practice makes perfect” is comforting and incomplete. Practice makes behavior more available. If athletes repeat confusion, poor positioning, uncontrolled pacing, or passive waiting, those patterns also become familiar. A better phrase is “practice makes permanent”—so coaches must design what athletes are most likely to repeat.
Effective practice begins with one learning objective. Not “work hard” or “get better at running form,” but an observable behavior: hold the first repeat within the prescribed range; land with stable alignment; recognize the open passing lane; exit the turn with the planned stroke count; maintain posture during the last third of the interval. The objective tells the coach what to observe and the athlete what to attempt.
Practice time is not learning time automatically. Audit a normal session. How many minutes are athletes waiting in a line? How long does the coach talk before the athlete can try? How many repetitions occur without knowing whether they matched the objective? An efficient practice increases the number of relevant decisions and attempts while preserving enough recovery, attention, and safety for quality.
Instruction should be understandable and brief enough to use. If the athlete must remember six technical points, attention fragments. Choose the highest-leverage cue. Demonstrate when a visual model is clearer than explanation. Ask the athlete to restate the objective. Then create an attempt quickly enough that the instruction remains active.
Data collection should fit inside practice rather than consume it. A stopwatch, one camera angle, a simple tally, a lap split, or an RPE response may be enough. Collecting every available metric can reduce repetitions and change the behavior you intended to observe. Decide in advance: what observation answers the learning question, and who will record it without disrupting the session?
Assigning a recorder can improve both efficiency and learning. An assistant, paired athlete, or rotating observer can collect a simple count while the coach watches the whole movement. The recorder should know exactly what qualifies as the target behavior. If two observers would score the same attempt differently, the objective or measurement needs clearer definition.
Suppose the objective is controlled early pacing. Instead of reviewing an entire run afterward, measure the first two repetitions or opening segment. Give athletes a target range and ask them to predict the result before seeing the split. They experience the pace, compare perception with evidence, and try again. The data supports learning in the moment.
For running form, video can make one cue visible. Follow the recording setup: stable camera, clear view, appropriate angle, and a short clip that reflects the intended speed. APOPT can help surface cadence, posture, contact timing, stability, or alignment. Choose one result connected to the practice objective. A long report is not automatically better feedback.
Practice design also includes the athlete’s role. Ask, “What did you feel?” or “Which attempt best matched the objective?” before revealing every measurement. This develops self-monitoring and prevents dependence. If the athlete’s perception and the data disagree, treat the difference as a learning opportunity rather than proof the athlete was wrong.
Measurement needs a comparison. One attempt may be affected by novelty, fatigue, or recording angle. Repeated observations under similar conditions are more useful. Decide what constitutes a meaningful change and what will merely trigger another look. If form changes but discomfort appears, stop treating the metric as success and follow appropriate support procedures.
Today you will redesign ten minutes of a real practice. Remove wasted time, narrow the objective, select one measurement, and create at least two opportunities to apply information. For three athletes, record what happened and what you would change. The goal is not a perfect session. It is a tighter relationship between the intended learning, the repetitions athletes perform, and the evidence the coach collects.
Your challenge is to ask a hard question: If I watched the athletes rather than the plan, what are they actually practicing? Redesign until the answer matches the objective.
Define practice by the behavior athletes repeat, not the activity name on the plan.
Use one clear objective, one high-leverage cue, and frequent relevant attempts.
Collect the minimum evidence needed to improve the next repetition.
Audit ten minutes — 7 minutes: Mark talk, waiting, recovery, relevant attempts, and feedback opportunities.
Write one objective — 5 minutes: Make it observable and connected to the sport skill.
Select one measure — 5 minutes: Video, time, count, split, form observation, or athlete perception.
Redesign — 10 minutes: Increase useful repetitions and add two information-to-next-attempt cycles.
Observation protocol — 8 minutes: Define what will be recorded for at least three athletes and what counts as useful change.
Peer test — 5 minutes: A partner checks whether the drill actually practices the stated objective.
Run the redesigned ten-minute segment. Record the objective, measurement, number of useful attempts, observations for at least three athletes, and one change for the next session.
Search motor learning, practice design, contextual interference, attentional focus, or repetition quality. Use and verify the standard AI summary. Prepare to identify where athletes wait, where coaches talk too much, and how one segment can create more useful learning.
The measurement may be pace or heart rate, but it may also be decision accuracy, entry angle, landing stability, repeat timing, shot preparation, stroke count, or technical consistency from video.
Record only what the objective requires. Keep identifiable clips within the authorized setting, use appropriate camera placement, and avoid publicly sharing clips or analysis outputs.
