Turn your interest in sports into practical skills in data analysis, machine learning, and app development. Data-Driven Athletics (CBE 493R) uses athletic data to explore engineering questions and build tools that athletes and coaches can use.
3 credits | Tuesdays and Thursdays | 9:30–10:45 a.m. | 384 CB
Instructor: Professor John Hedengren
Through hands-on assignments and a team project, you’ll learn to:
Collect, clean, and visualize wearable and video data.
Apply statistics and introductory machine learning to athletic performance questions.
Build and test an app or dashboard using AI-assisted development and user feedback.
Turn technical findings into clear recommendations for athletes, coaches, and other nontechnical audiences.
Verify AI outputs, evaluate uncertainty, and protect personal data.
Students from all majors and student-athletes are welcome. Introductory Python and data-analysis modules, guided examples, and teams across disciplines will support students new to programming.
Bring your curiosity about sports and technology, and develop skills you can apply far beyond athletics.
