The Data-Driven Athletics Internship is an interdisciplinary experience that brings together engineering, exercise science, sports biomechanics, artificial intelligence, computer vision, and community outreach. Students work with BYU Engineering and project partners, including Intermountain Health, Utah Jazz Youth, and coaching organizations throughout Utah, to apply AI-assisted video and pose analysis to running and basketball performance. Interns help process authorized athlete videos, evaluate data and analysis quality, prepare biomechanical reports and visualizations, and translate technical findings into useful information for coaches and project partners while gaining experience with responsible AI, data management, and real-world engineering workflows. The internship requires approximately 126 hours over 14 weeks (about 9 hours per week) and may be completed for academic credit through EXSC 399R or CBE 498R with appropriate approval.
The Roadrunner Coaching Internship is a hands-on, interdisciplinary experience that combines youth coaching, exercise science, sports psychology, biomechanics, and data-driven athletic development. Seven BYU students each work with an assigned group of approximately 10–15 Roadrunner Junior Club athletes, participating directly in practices, running alongside athletes, helping lead training activities, and supporting individual development under experienced adult supervision. Interns learn to design and adapt youth running programs, apply sports psychology principles, communicate effectively with athletes and parents, and use tools such as AI Form Analysis and GPS watch data to supplement observation and coaching judgment. The internship also includes technology training through the BYU PRISM Group’s Data-Driven Engineering project. It requires approximately 126 hours over 14 weeks (about 9 hours per week) and may be completed for academic credit through EXSC 399R or CBE 498R with appropriate departmental approval.
